This is my thirteenth year teaching and fourth with Piedmont. Previously I was an elementary reading specialist, 6th/7th grade IB history teacher, and high school IB civics & economics teacher in Iredell County. I am very psyched to be working with your children, history is my real passion! I am originally from upstate New York and received my undergraduate degree in Adolescent Social Studies Education and a master's in Literacy Education through SUNY Cortland in upstate New York.
For the past several years I have served a site visitor, consultant and workshop leader for the IBEN network. IB (International Baccalaureate) curriculum and pedagogy are things I feel very strongly about. I am glad to be able to use my knowledge to help out other IB educators at school and around the country! Over the years I've worked with UNC-Chapel Hill, Duke University, and UNC-Charlotte to create teaching materials focusing on global awareness. I also served as a question writer for our social studies state test.
I have found a lot of professional enjoyment trying to challenge and push all students academically. One of my expertise's has been working with AIG students. Creating rigor, challenging them, and setting high expectations is a real goal in my class. I was awarded a grant to do action-research for the Governor's Teacher Network run by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI). My work was to see if there was causation between rigor and academic success with the AIG population (there is!). I also have my Praxis certificate to teach academically gifted children.
I played soccer, basketball, and my favorite baseball through high school. I have also coached baseball and basketball at the high school level. I love to go out to concerts, watch movies (BIG movie nerd), check out cultural events in the city, or catch a sporting event. I love the Boston Red Sox almost to a fault along with the Syracuse Orange.
